Abstract

Indonesia is among countries that are vulnerable to natural disasters. Volunteer is someone who has a desire to help others without expecting reward or known as altruism (Myers, 1999). If you see the volunteers, which is expected of individuals who have the capacity to survive even in a difficult situation in a state of disaster. Capacity is referred to as resilience (Maddi & Khoshaba, 2005). Therefore, this study aims to determine the relationship between altruism with resilience. Participants in this study were 100 volunteers who are members of an Non Government Organization (NGO). Methods of data collection use a scale of resilience and altruism. By using a quantitative approach and the concept of descriptive correlation study Pearson product moment correlation, the result showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between resilience and altruism (r = .448, p < .01) of volunteer. This is means that the higher the resilience, the higher the altruism, vice versa, the lower the resilience, the lower the altruism that is owned by a natural disaster volunteer.

Abstract

Classical psychology tends to be conservative. It deals merely with universal theories concerning individual processes. The trend towards more social oriented paradigms started when European psychologists Serge Moscovici raised the issue of social representation (1961), and Henrri Tajfel and Turner published their theories on Social Identity (1979). Psychology is no longer individual. It is related to social and cultural environment. Each group, race or ethnic has its own psychology, which is relevant to their respective context. In 1933, an Asian Psychologist, Uichol Kim and his European colleague John Berry initiate the term indigenous psychology that is defined as ”the scientific study of human behavior or mind that is native, that is not transported from other regions, and that is designed for its people”. Since there is no matching Indonesian word for “indigenous”, in an Indonesian Social Psychology Association Conference held at the University of Indonesia, Jakarta, in 1999, I coined the word “ulayat”. I borrowed the term from anthropology and the adat (traditional) law that means almost similar to Kim and Berry definition of “indigenous”. This article discusses the history, the development of theories and application of this new field in psychology in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Life is choice, including the role that we choose to fulfill our live. Sometimes, life is very cruel when most of the time we are forced to take bad decisions, simply because any better options are unavailable. The life of wives who also work as prostitutes is an example of how cruel life really is. They must live their lives in two different characters, as a wife as well as a prostitute. The first requires them to behave the same as the common wives used to behave, and the latter forces them to act similar to all prostitutes used to act. Therefore, what they have to do as wives contradicts to what they have do as prostitutes. Thus, it leads them to have a psychological strain in their lives. As life must go on, they must also figure out ways to undertake the strain. The psychological strain and the ways taken to loose the strain are unique and interesting. Therefore, this research will be focused on both subjects. In the more specific points, the psychological problems of wives who also work as prostitutes will be elaborated further in the process of learning and synchronizing the live concept of those women.
